Wheatland-Chili is Fiscally Prepared for State Cuts

A recent article on the news on Channel 13 (http://www.13wham.com/news/local/story/Monroe-County-Suburban-Districts-Have-258M-in/V9xKnwVD9U-R_7T6LdB1sA.cspx ) suggested that our District is not prepared for the impact of the Governor‘s proposed budget. This is totally inaccurate!

The Board of Education’s financial oversight for the district has been anticipating the current impact of the Governor’s proposed budget reductions. Their fiscal decisions have been proactive and well thought-out over multiple years to assure program consistency with a reasonable balance of expenditures and revenues.

Current State Aid Picture

WCCS is projected to receive $784,279 less State aid than in 2009-10. That is a loss of approximately 11.2% in State aid revenue.

This is a significant amount but one the Board has been anticipating and working to address.

The Fiscal Committee of the Board is guided by the following principles to address anticipated loss of revenue from the State:

· Keep levy at acceptable level…flat when possible

· Maintain reserves for use in fiscal management

· BOE commitment to replenish reserves to be used as a fiscal tool

· If State aid is partially restored reconsider all strategies used

· Ongoing savings throughout each fiscal year

This May will be the third consecutive budget that the Board will bring to the voters that is less than the previous year’s budget. The district remains in excellent fiscal condition and is prepared to address reductions in State revenues with minimal impact on program or the tax levy by using multi-year fiscal plans, ongoing budgetary reductions, and planned use of reserves.

WCCS Student To Climb Kilimanjaro

To Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro for Charity

Diane Schmitt is currently a junior at Cornell University majoring in food science.

I am grateful for coming from a small and supportive high school. I feel that I developed a valuable skills that I continue to use in college especially research and presentation skills as well as, the opportunity to gain leadership experience.

I am involved in several groups at Cornell. One group that I am especially excited about is Fistula Free Climb. The group is made up of students that are raising money for OperationOF which funds operations and support for women with obstetric fistulas in Africa.

I will be traveling to Tanzania with Fistula Free Climb from January 3 to 23. I will be volunteering in a hospital and climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa at 19,341ft. We hope to raise $100,000 for OperationOF an organization that delegates the money to hospitals to perform the surgeries for women with obstetric fistulas.

WCCS Students Travel Abroad

Western New York Students to be delegates to The Hague International Model UN Conference

Trisha Ignatowski, Emily McCall and Garret Quimby of Wheatland-Chili High School were selected to participate in the BOCES 2 International Model United Nations program coordinated by the Gifted and Talented Education Department.

The students will spend months working with their advisors, Robert Phillips and Susan Jacobitti, in an intensive research effort in the study of the country of Saudi Arabia, which they will represent at The Hague International Model UN conference in The Netherlands. This conference is the closest simulation of the real UN for high school students. In January, more than 4,000 students representing over 200 high schools in the United States, Western and Eastern Europe, the Far East, Middle East and Central and South America participate in this international conference.

The BOCES 2 delegation of 16 western New York State students is one of only two public school delegations from the United States invited to participate in this conference. This will be the 39^th year that BOCES 2 has sent a delegation to this prestigious conference. “The students will gain a new perspective of the world as they represent a country and prepare to discuss international issues as a delegate at the International Model UN,” said Charmy Perry, coordinator of BOCES 2 gifted and talented education. “They also serve as student ambassadors from the United States and are selected for this program after an extensive application process, recommendation, and interview,” said Perry. “We expect much out of them as they are highly qualified students and eager to learn about the world. They bring to the conference new insight, passion, and commitment to a topic they have researched as a delegate.”

Middle School Principal Appointed

The Board of Education approved Brad Zilliox as the new Middle School Principal at their November meeting. Mr. Zilliox was chosen after an interview process involving parents, support staff, teachers, board members, and administration.

Mr. Zilliox is currently the Assistant Principal at the Willink Middle School in Webster. He has held that position for the past five years. He also has experience as an Assistant Principal in Newark and as an administrator at Monroe 2 Orleans BOCES. Mr. Zilliox has also taught High School Social Studies and was a teacher for the New Visions Program.

We are excited for his start here at Wheatland-Chili in early January 2010. His wide range of experiences will continue the emphasis of quality education here at WCCS.
