Crossing Guard News

Crossing Guard Service Ends April 29, 2011

Currently the Town of Wheatland supports a crossing guard for elementary students at the corner of Browns Avenue and North Road. Due to the district’s new busing policy that provides transportation to all students, the number of walkers has diminished to less than five walkers per week on average over a period of months.

Due to this sharp decline in pedestrian traffic, the Town of Wheatland will cease to provide this service. The service will stop at the end of the day on Friday, April 29, 2011. If your child does walk, you will need to make plans to instruct your child how to safely cross that intersection and or make other arrangements.

Future Business Leaders of America Competition

Wheatland-Chili students place in Future Business Leaders of America Competition

Wheatland-Chili students in the Future Business Leaders America (FBLA) program placed in the recent District 10 competition held at Bryant & Stratton College.

Students competed in a variety of business categories. Matt Donovan took first place in Personal Finance, placing third were Aaron Swanson in Technology Concepts and Business Calculations; Harry Devoe in Introduction to Business and John Spencer in Business Law.

Students who participate in FBLA are interested in learning more about business and participate in community service projects. The mission of FBLA is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs.
The students, who placed at the recent competition, will compete again in April at the 2011 New York State FBLA competition, at the Riverside Convention Center, in Rochester.

Kids turn into scientists

They watch plants grow and note mutations for international project.

Middle School, a class experiment could yield important results for researchers around the world. And it gives them a chance to try their hand at being real-life scientists
The BrachyBio! project allows students to assist in an international effort to characterize the genetics of a species of plant. The project is named after the plant used in the experiment, Brachypodium distachyon, a grass species related to wheat.

"We are essentially crowd-sourcing our genetics," said Tom Brutnell, scientist at the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research at Cornell University, which sponsors the project along with the National Science Foundation. "And in the process, we're teaching kids about plants."

Wheatland-Chili is one of a dozen classrooms across the state that have incorporated the project into their curriculums.

Kim LaCelle, the Wheatland-Chili science teacher participating in the project, knows how important it is to have her students involved in hands-on projects. Her classroom is filled with scientific wonders, including tanks filled with tropical fish and albino frogs, mounted insects and windows that overlook a courtyard abundant with squirrels, birds and other wildlife.

"It's difficult to do things in school that connect to the real world," LaCelle said. "But this (project) shows that studying plants is really important, which I don't think kids even realized until now."

The results of the BrachyBio! project could ultimately lead to important scientific breakthroughs including causes of shifts in agricultural land use due to global warming, pressures on food supplies due to growing populations and use of biofuels to meet energy demands.

"It makes us feel important," said seventh-grader Taylor Clar. "It's fun stuff to do in class."
Throughout the months-long project, the 22 students in LaCelle's class will observe their plants and record any unusual characteristics that could reveal mutations in the plant. Those mutations might include different colors and striping, or an abnormal size and shape. If any mutations are found, the characteristics are relayed to the researchers at Cornell, as well as uploaded to a central database called iPlant, which is accessible to scientists around the world.

"I like seeing the plants after they've started growing and seeing how they've changed and mutated," said seventh-grader Rhiannon Goetze.
The plants and such equipment as temperature and humidity meters were provided free by Cornell. A researcher from Cornell even came out to LaCelle's classroom to check on the progress. "I like being depended on by college people," said seventh-grader Jazmine Boswell.

The program is still in its early stages, and Cornell is recruiting new classrooms for the project. LaCelle said she encourages other teachers to take part in it.

"What's so unique and so novel about (the project) is that it allows the students to become a part of the process of scientific discovery," she said. "And it gets them excited about science."

To Members of the Wheatland-Chili Community,

The Wheatland Chili Board took action at their meeting on September 27th to search for new leadership for the district for the start the 2011-12 school year.

The Board believes a fresh perspective will enhance their ability to plan for the future. The Board of Education will announce the search process and associated timelines in the near future. Through the Superintendent search process, the Wheatland-Chili Central School District’s community will have the opportunity to have impact on the future of the District.
I will continue to address the daily operations of the district and implement the District’s Strategic Plan through the end of the present school year.
It has been my privilege to work in the district for nearly two decades in several positions. It has been a wonderful journey that has taught me many things and connected me with many students, colleagues, and families along the way. I thank the many community members that have partnered with me to make the district a source of pride for the community. My experiences at Wheatland-Chili are ones that are part of who I am now and will fondly remain with me as I continue my professional journey.

Former Student Raises Money for Cancer

The 100 Miles of Nowhere

To benefit the Livestrong Foundation

and support cancer research

What: A 100 mile bike ride with participants registered around the world! "100 Miles" refers to the distance ridden, "of Nowhere" refers to an infuriatingly small course (around the circle of East and West Cavalier Roads … 213 times!!!!!!).Join us

(unofficially) and ride, walk, rollerblade, or jog as much or as little as you want! (or just pull up a lawnchair and watch as the spectacle unfolds!)

When: Saturday May 8th 6AM to whenever the task is completed! (It should take 10 hours give or take a few!) You can come anytime and stay as long as you like!!

Where: Headquarters is 72 W. Cavalier Rd., Scottsville, NY. (Don’t forget your lunch and your lawn chairs!!) Snacks will be available for sale with proceeds donated to Livestrong.

Who: Corey Brandes of 72 West Cavalier Rd. will be riding 100 miles in 1 day around the circle 213 times. (your support will make this task much more bearable!)

Donations will be accepted but are not required. We’ve donated to enter the event. Any extra is icing on the cake to battle cancer!!

There is a map (attached) of the course and parking for those who are traveling from outside the village of Scottsville.

Wheatland-Chili is Fiscally Prepared for State Cuts

A recent article on the news on Channel 13 (http://www.13wham.com/news/local/story/Monroe-County-Suburban-Districts-Have-258M-in/V9xKnwVD9U-R_7T6LdB1sA.cspx ) suggested that our District is not prepared for the impact of the Governor‘s proposed budget. This is totally inaccurate!

The Board of Education’s financial oversight for the district has been anticipating the current impact of the Governor’s proposed budget reductions. Their fiscal decisions have been proactive and well thought-out over multiple years to assure program consistency with a reasonable balance of expenditures and revenues.

Current State Aid Picture

WCCS is projected to receive $784,279 less State aid than in 2009-10. That is a loss of approximately 11.2% in State aid revenue.

This is a significant amount but one the Board has been anticipating and working to address.

The Fiscal Committee of the Board is guided by the following principles to address anticipated loss of revenue from the State:

· Keep levy at acceptable level…flat when possible

· Maintain reserves for use in fiscal management

· BOE commitment to replenish reserves to be used as a fiscal tool

· If State aid is partially restored reconsider all strategies used

· Ongoing savings throughout each fiscal year

This May will be the third consecutive budget that the Board will bring to the voters that is less than the previous year’s budget. The district remains in excellent fiscal condition and is prepared to address reductions in State revenues with minimal impact on program or the tax levy by using multi-year fiscal plans, ongoing budgetary reductions, and planned use of reserves.

To Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro for Charity

Diane Schmitt is currently a junior at Cornell University majoring in food science.

I am grateful for coming from a small and supportive high school. I feel that I developed a valuable skills that I continue to use in college especially research and presentation skills as well as, the opportunity to gain leadership experience.

I am involved in several groups at Cornell. One group that I am especially excited about is Fistula Free Climb. The group is made up of students that are raising money for OperationOF which funds operations and support for women with obstetric fistulas in Africa.

I will be traveling to Tanzania with Fistula Free Climb from January 3 to 23. I will be volunteering in a hospital and climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa at 19,341ft. We hope to raise $100,000 for OperationOF an organization that delegates the money to hospitals to perform the surgeries for women with obstetric fistulas.

Western New York Students to be delegates to The Hague International Model UN Conference

Trisha Ignatowski, Emily McCall and Garret Quimby of Wheatland-Chili High School were selected to participate in the BOCES 2 International Model United Nations program coordinated by the Gifted and Talented Education Department.

The students will spend months working with their advisors, Robert Phillips and Susan Jacobitti, in an intensive research effort in the study of the country of Saudi Arabia, which they will represent at The Hague International Model UN conference in The Netherlands. This conference is the closest simulation of the real UN for high school students. In January, more than 4,000 students representing over 200 high schools in the United States, Western and Eastern Europe, the Far East, Middle East and Central and South America participate in this international conference.

The BOCES 2 delegation of 16 western New York State students is one of only two public school delegations from the United States invited to participate in this conference. This will be the 39^th year that BOCES 2 has sent a delegation to this prestigious conference. “The students will gain a new perspective of the world as they represent a country and prepare to discuss international issues as a delegate at the International Model UN,” said Charmy Perry, coordinator of BOCES 2 gifted and talented education. “They also serve as student ambassadors from the United States and are selected for this program after an extensive application process, recommendation, and interview,” said Perry. “We expect much out of them as they are highly qualified students and eager to learn about the world. They bring to the conference new insight, passion, and commitment to a topic they have researched as a delegate.”

Middle School Principal Appointed

The Board of Education approved Brad Zilliox as the new Middle School Principal at their November meeting. Mr. Zilliox was chosen after an interview process involving parents, support staff, teachers, board members, and administration.

Mr. Zilliox is currently the Assistant Principal at the Willink Middle School in Webster. He has held that position for the past five years. He also has experience as an Assistant Principal in Newark and as an administrator at Monroe 2 Orleans BOCES. Mr. Zilliox has also taught High School Social Studies and was a teacher for the New Visions Program.

We are excited for his start here at Wheatland-Chili in early January 2010. His wide range of experiences will continue the emphasis of quality education here at WCCS.

H1N1 Update: Good Hygiene is the Best Defense

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Almost daily we are hearing news reports about H1N1 and how it may reoccur once school is in session. As you send your child back to school, you may have wondered about these news reports regarding the H1N1 virus and how we are preparing as a district. I want to assure you that we have been preparing for this possible outbreak.

Our nurses are in regular and ongoing contact with our school district physician and have been informed about the most recent developments regarding the HINI virus. Since the flu virus can live for a number of hours on surfaces such as desks and doorknobs, as a safeguard, custodial staff will clean classrooms and common areas regularly. Our faculty will be reinforcing proper hygiene etiquette with the students. Although it may appear simplistic, practicing good hygiene and proper hygiene etiquette continues to be the best defense against becoming ill with the flu. To that end, we have installed additional hand sanitizers in each school for students and adults to use.

If the flu becomes more severe, we may take additional steps to prevent the spread such as increasing the space between people (desks), postponing field and sports trips, or closing school for a certain period of time. If the latter becomes necessary, we will notify parents immediately. For planning purposes, please anticipate that possibility and arrange for how your child(ren) could be cared for in your own home.

The district developed a Pandemic Emergency Plan to address issues that may arise. You can find that Plan on our website at www.wheatland.k12.ny.us. I recommend that you visit www.flu.gov to provide you with updated information on how to stay healthy with reminders about proper hygiene etiquette as well as ideas on how to prepare in the event of a pandemic. Thank you for taking the time to read these documents.
